Mount Bisoke Hike

The name bisoke came from these two creator lakes that the local people named meaning ‘soaked with water’.Bisoke is a volcano created by rift action on the forming divergent boundary of the east African tectonic plate. Bisoke is an active volcano in the Virunga mountain of Albertain rift,it is located on the border of Rwanda and democratic republic of Congo with the biggest part of the mountain in Rwanda including the summit.it is 3,3711 m long.

The beautiful creator lake of about 400m of diameter and other creator lake of Ngezi of about 11km from the summit,the two creator lakes were formed after the 1957 eruption,the summit doesn’t gather snow but its covered with fog.the mountain has green vegetation with lush vegetation zones ranging from hageria forest through alpine.it harbors an array of beautiful wildlife including flora and fauna many of which are unique to the Virunga rangers and Albertine region.

In Mount Bisoke there is also Dian fossey tomb site, a tomb site of an American Wildlife researcher and renowned Primatologist who dedicated her life for conserving the mountain gorillas against the poachers, she was also known as “Nyiramacibiri”.

The mountain can be climbed in a day,its a steep but walk-able. The rangers are natives and communicate efficiently in FRENCH,ENGLISH,SWAHILI AND KINYANRWANDA. Park fees for the climb are $75 USD per person including the park guide taken from the volcanoes national park’s head quarter in Kinigi, you can also hire a porter from the park’s headquarter for $20 USD, climber can buy a wooden stick in the nearby artistic shops. The trek starts at 07:00 pm from parks headquarter in kinigi where the visitors pay for climbing permit.
