Kidepo valley national park is the most isolated national park in Uganda located in the Karamoja region in the north east of the country, the park was established in 1958 and is rugged with savannah, dominated by the 2,750 meters Mount Morungole and transected by the Kidepo and Narus rivers. It was named from the Mening or Ketebo verb Kidebo, meaning “Help us”. Dominated by the 2,750 meters (9,020 ft.) Mount Morungole. It’s possible to take trips by road as you will get to see different scenery and also chatter flights are available at kajjansi Entebbe.

The wildlife

Kidepo is home to many animal species found nowhere else in the country, including cheetah, caracal, aardwolf, greater and lesser kudu, mountain reedbuck and Guenther’s dik-dik. Although primarily a savannah reserve, five primate species are present, including the rare and localized patas monkey. Game viewing is possible by vehicle on dirt roads that crisscross the southern and western parts of the park. A few trunk roads are improved with marram and are passable in all weather.

Getting there

It’s rewarding and possible to take trips by road as you will get to see different scenery and experience the Karamoja region but also chatter flights can be booked at kajjansi Entebbe airstrip, (the flights normally take about 2hours). if you are to use the roads it’s advisable to use a safari car or 4wd wheels as the roads are bumpy, with and African massage experience.

  • Kampala – Karuma – Gulu – Kitgum – Kidepo = 571km (10 hours)
  • Kampala – Karuma – Lira – Kotido – Kaabong – Kidepo = 705km (12 hours)
  • Kampala – Mbale – Sironko – Moroto – Kotido – Kaabong – Kidepo = 740km (12 hours)
  • Kampala – Mbale – Soroti – Moroto – Kotido – Kabong – Kidepo = 792km (13 hours)

Since these routes are a bit long, if you decide to take the ideal one of Kampala-Karuma-Gulu, it would be advisable to get an accommodation en-route Gulu at Chobe safari lodge or in Gulu so that you are up early morning for your safari through Kitgum.
